Background of the Study
Traditional dance is a vibrant expression of cultural heritage in Yenagoa Local Government Area, Bayelsa State, serving as a conduit for emotional expression and communal identity. Dance in this region is not only an art form but also a medium through which individuals communicate feelings, celebrate cultural milestones, and cope with social stressors (Ighodalo, 2023). The rhythmic movements, music, and collective participation in traditional dance provide an outlet for emotional release and self-expression (Omotayo, 2024). Recent studies have shown that engagement in cultural dance enhances emotional regulation and fosters community solidarity (Bassey, 2025). However, the interplay between traditional dance and emotional expression remains underexplored in contemporary research. This study evaluates how traditional dance contributes to emotional expression, considering both the psychological and social dimensions of this cultural practice, and examines its role in reinforcing cultural identity and resilience (Akinyemi, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Despite its cultural significance, there is limited research on the role of traditional dance in facilitating emotional expression in Yenagoa. Many participants in cultural dance report emotional benefits, yet systematic evaluations remain scarce (Effiong, 2024). The lack of comprehensive data obscures the understanding of how traditional dance influences mental health and community well-being. This study aims to address this gap by investigating the relationship between dance and emotional expression, thereby providing evidence for its psychological and social benefits (Obasi, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the role of traditional dance in emotional expression.

  2. To evaluate the psychological benefits derived from participation in dance.

  3. To propose methods for enhancing the integration of traditional dance in mental health promotion.

Research Questions:

  1. How does traditional dance facilitate emotional expression?

  2. What psychological benefits do participants experience from dance?

  3. How can traditional dance be better integrated into mental health initiatives?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Participation in traditional dance positively impacts emotional expression.

  2. Engagement in dance correlates with improved psychological well-being.

  3. Enhanced cultural dance programs will further promote emotional health.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the vital link between traditional dance and emotional expression, offering insights that could benefit cultural preservation and mental health programs. The results will inform community leaders and mental health practitioners on leveraging cultural practices to enhance psychological resilience (Edet, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to evaluating the relationship between traditional dance and emotional expression in Yenagoa Local Government Area, Bayelsa State, excluding other art forms or regions.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Traditional Dance: Cultural dance forms rooted in indigenous practices.

  • Emotional Expression: The process of conveying feelings through non-verbal means.

  • Cultural Identity: The shared identity derived from common cultural practices.
